Preserving the environment for future generations

Those who benefit from nature also share the responsibility of protecting it for future generations. This philosophy of sustainable development was shared by Mr. Thanyachat Auttanukune, Vice President in charge of Marketing and New Business, C.P. Vietnam Corporation, at a seminar hosted by Thanh Nien Newspaper on June 26, 2026.

As the agriculture and food industry faces growing pressure to reduce emissions and operate more sustainably, businesses are increasingly rethinking how sustainability can be embedded across the entire value chain. Speaking at the seminar "Green Transformation: What do we need to accelerate?", organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper, Mr. Thanyachat - Vice President in charge of Marketing and New Business, shared C.P. Vietnam's practical experience in advancing its green transformation journey. Reflecting on Vietnam's proverb, "When you eat the fruit, remember the one who planted the tree," he noted that the saying carries an important message about environmental stewardship. "If we benefit from the environment, we also have a responsibility to care for it and preserve it for future generations," he said.

According to Mr. Thanyachat Auttanukune, ensuring global food security is one of the key reasons why green transformation is no longer optional. By 2050, the world's population is expected to approach 10 billion, requiring food production to increase by around 60% compared with current levels. At the same time, agriculture accounts for an estimated 25-30% of global greenhouse gas emissions, consumes around 70% of freshwater resources, and uses roughly half of the world's habitable land. "If we continue with business as usual, the planet simply cannot sustain it," he said. "Green transformation means fundamentally reshaping the way we produce. It is the pathway to sustainable development," Mr. Thanyachat emphasized. "One of C.P.'s core principles is that wherever we invest, we must first create value for the country and its people before creating value for the company itself. That philosophy is reflected in our integrated Feed-Farm-Food model, which enables us to manage the entire value chain from farm to table."

Mr. Thanyachat added that C.P.'s long-term sustainability strategy aligns closely with Vietnam's national vision of achieving Net Zero by 2050. To support this goal, the company focuses on three strategic pillars: advancing a circular economy, strengthening an integrated value chain from upstream production to downstream distribution, and empowering people through new ways of working and technology adoption. As part of this commitment, C.P. Vietnam has integrated sustainability into its operations by increasing renewable energy to approximately 34% of its total energy consumption, installing around 51 MW of rooftop solar capacity, and committing to plant 3 million trees between 2021 and 2030, with more than 1.5 million trees already planted. The company is also driving smarter operations through digital transformation, including smart manufacturing, intelligent resource management, digital traceability, data-driven decision-making, biodegradable packaging, and the recycling of more than 1,400 tons of plastic packaging.

"C.P. Vietnam operates not only in compliance with Vietnamese regulations but also according to international standards to meet the requirements of markets such as Europe and Japan," Mr. Thanyachat said. “We have successfully exported to countries with some of the world's most stringent standards, while encouraging our business partners to embrace ESG principles and green transformation. Our achievements are the result of collective effort and strong partnerships—just as the Vietnamese proverb says: "One tree alone cannot make a hill, but three trees together can form a high mountain”.
